Psychologists are trained to use interviews and questionnaires to determine a person's strengths and challenges and to develop plans and strategies so that people can make the changes they would like to make in their lives. Those changes can be anything from quitting smoking to getting over a death to how to cope with a new baby. Psychologists work with individuals, groups and families and across the entire age range from children to seniors. The kinds of concerns that people bring to psychologists could be related to:
depression
anxiety
pain management
phobias
physical illness
addictions
sexuality
parenting
marital and family relationships
lifestyle management
stress management
work-related "burnout", and
career exploration.
A psychologist can help to assess difficulties in the areas of memory, learning, problem-solving and school/academic performance.
Psychologists are required to have either a Masters or doctorate/PhD degree which can take from two up to six years after a bachelor's degree. Throughout their education and training psychologists are required to work with clients and patients under the close supervision of registered psychologists. To work as a psychologist in Newfoundland and Labrador psychologists must be licensed and registered with a provincial regulatory body. This regulatory body is responsible for setting the standard for entry into the profession and issuing licenses to practice. In this province, the minimum requirement to register as a psychologist is a Masters degree and two years of postgraduate supervised practice. The names of all psychologists are published annually in the local paper.
